Yoyo Fun

It’s been several months … I am nothing if not inconsistent … so here we go again and I will ‘try’ to spend a little more time here. That whole Christmas thing with the grandson is my impetus this time. That said, ‘twice-loved’ is the heartbeat of the blog and today I packed away a little lap quilt I began twenty plus years ago I’m sure. I found the quilt in a box in my shed and dragged it inside. I think perhaps I didn’t finish it because it was kind of blah …. lots of white space … too much white space.

With lots of fabric scraps around I decided to make a bunch of yoyos and attach to each white circle. Finished today. Lots of twice-loved buttons from the button jar gone into the finished product. And I ended up with a cute little quilt that I really really like.

Twice-loved!

Too Soon?

Last week one of my grandsons asked, “Gram, why do you hate Christmas?”

What??! I was floored! Not only do I ‘not hate’ Christmas; I LOVE Christmas. Always have. Love the anticipation, the decorating, the gift wrapping, the cookie making, the songs, the concerts, the colors, the scent of pine and fir, and once upon a time, the Christmas services. I tried to explain. It’s not Christmas itself. It’s just that it starts so early. And so commercialized. The jack-o-lantern comes down; Jack Frost goes up. By the time Christmas arrives, a good many people are sick of it and have spent so much time getting ready for it, they leave no time to enjoy it.

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about his comment all week and have decided to embrace it all. Jingle all the way! Just so he knows that Gram does NOT hate Christmas. Besides, so what if someone seeking a little joy finds it in hanging a November 1st stocking? There are bigger things happening in this world for me to spend my time ‘tut-tut’ing over. Is it really such a big deal if the symbols of the season show up early? I think not. And as for the commercialism, I can buy into it or not. The choice is mine, right? What others do is really none of my business.

So here we go. I’ve decided to ‘start Christmas’ today. Not diving in 100%. But a little every day … I can do that. Don’t want my boy thinking Gram is a Grinch.

The figurine I’m showcasing is one my mom gave me years ago, knowing how fond I am of nutcrackers. Hint to anyone reading this … never let anyone know you have a ‘collection’. While people mean well, you will be on the receiving end of add-ons to your collection that you might never give a second look at yourself. This one, however, I loved and still do. Twice-loved again and again. Moms just know us, don’t they?

54 days ….
